Is using a Crossplay cheat or solver really cheating?
It depends on who you're playing. NYT's Crossplay policy doesn't mention solvers, and Next Tile only reads a screenshot you take, so it never touches the game. Against someone who expects a fair match, using one mid-game is cheating in spirit. Reviewing a finished game is how you learn.
What each kind of Crossplay helper does
A search for a Crossplay cheat usually means one of three tools:
| Tool | What you give it | How it picks a move |
|---|---|---|
| Word finder | Your seven letters | Highest score, without seeing the board |
| Board solver | Your board, typed in or from a screenshot | Highest score on your board |
| Next Tile | One screenshot | Most likely to win the game |
Points are not the whole story. In one real game MOUTH scores 29 and RUTH 26, but RUTH wins 62% of the time and MOUTH 57%, because MOUTH leaves you worse tiles.
What NYT's rules say
- Solvers aren't mentioned. NYT's Crossplay Acceptable Use Policy, in effect since February 11, 2026, doesn't bring up solvers or outside help.
- Hacking is banned. It bars altering or hacking the game. Breaking the policy can mean suspension or removal.
- Next Tile stays outside the game. It reads a screenshot you chose to take, and never connects to the app or your account.
- Rules can change. NYT can update its policy, so check the current one if you're unsure.
When it's fair to use one
- After the game. Upload a position you were stuck on and see what you missed.
- Against the computer. Practice games are a good place to check your moves.
- With a friend who agrees. If you both know, no one is misled.
- Not against someone who expects a fair match. That's between you and them, but they can't agree to something they don't know about.
Is my opponent cheating?
- One game proves nothing. Good players know strange words, and a lucky tray can score big.
- Patterns say more. Players get suspicious of obscure top-scoring words, turn after turn, played at a steady pace.
- You can't know for sure. If a game stops being fun, you can stop playing that person.
